تكتسب دراسة حزب العمل الإسرائيلي أهمية بارزة نظراً لكونه الحزب المؤسس للكيان الصهيوني في فلسطين والحزب الحاكم فيه خلال ثلاثة عقود متتالية (1948-1977)، ثم لاحقاً في فترتي (1992-1996) و(1999-2000)، هذا فضلاً عن الفترات التي شارك فيها بائتلاف حكومي مع حزب الليكود، والتي كان آخرها دخوله حكومة الوحدة الوطنية الحالية برئاسة آرييل شارون منذ شباط/فبراير 2001. كما تخطى دراسة هذا الحزب بأهمية استثنائية في هذه المرحلة الحرجة التي تمر بها القضية الفلسطينية والصراع العربي-الإسرائيلي وفي ظل عملية التسوية، وبخاصة بعد أن بدأت مفاوضات الوضع النهائي على المسار الفلسطيني، تتناول هذه الدراسة معظم شؤون حزب العمل الإسرائيلي التاريخية والفكرية والسياسية والتنظيمية والانتخابية في محور تمهيدي وثلاثة محاور رئيسية وخاتمة. في حين يلقي المحور التمهيدي الضوء على أبرز خصائص النظام الحزبي في إسرائيل، تتناول المحور الأول نشأة الحركة العمالية الصهيونية وتطورها التاريخي، ويركز على دراسة حزب الماباي، الإطار التاريخي لحزب العمل، في الفترة الممتدة بين تأسيسه عام 1930 وتأسيس حزب العمل الإسرائيلي عام 1968. ثم يبحث ظروف تأسيس حزب العمل وتطوره الأيديولوجي والتنظيمي، كما يتطرق إلى مجموعات أو أوساط الحزب الفكرية والسياسية وقياداته التاريخية والمعاصرة. ويدرس المحور الثاني تجربة الحزب السياسية بين الحكم والمعارضة، فيعرض أسباب وعوامل انتصاراته وهزائمه الانتخابية، ويقوم بتشريح قاعدته الاجتماعية والانتخابية. أما المحور الثالث والأخير فيتضمن عرضاً لمواقف الحزب التاريخي من الصراع العربي. الصهيوني، وبخاصة القضية الفلسطينية، وسبل تسوية ودراسة تطور هذه المواقف، وصولاً إلى تحليل المواقف الراهنة من هذه القضايا.
