ما كاد العالم يشرف على نهاية القرن العشرين وبداية قرن جديد، حتى أطلق صموئيل هنتغتون أطروحته الشهيرة تحت عنوان (صدام الحضارات) والتي حولها بعد ذلك إلى كتاب حمل عنوان (صدام الحضارات وإعادة صنع النظام العالمي).
وقبله أصدر فرانسيس فوكاياما نظريته في (نهاية التاريخ) معتبراً أن الديمقراطية لليبرالية هي أقصى ما يصل إليه الإنسان في هذا العصر، وإن التاريخ توقف عند الرأسمالية الغربية ومفاهيمها الديمقراطية الليبرالية.
بعد فترة من الزمن جاءت هجمات الحادي عشر من سبتمبر 2001 على نيويورك وواشنطن، والتي اتهم أسامة بن لادن وتنظيم القاعدة بتدبيرها. فاعتبر البعض أن نبوءة هنتغتون قد تحققت بالفعل بعد هذه الهجمات، وعادت الأضواء إلى هذه الأطروحة وتم استدعاء الأحكام المسبقة والأفكار القديمة عن العرب والمسلمين على خلفية هذه التداعيات، وما تبعها من شن الحرب على أفغانستان وتنظيم القاعدة، ثم شن الحرب بعد ذلك على العراق.
في هذا الكتاب نقاش لهذه المواضيع إضافة إلى أطروحات الديمقراطية والعلمانية، كما تتم المطالبة بها عندنا، وكما تمارس علينا.
في الفصل الأول من هذا الكتاب ناقشنا مقولات صموئيل هنتغتون في صدام الحضارات، ونظرية فرانسيس فوكوياما في نهاية التاريخ، وتداعيات هجمات الحادي عشر من سبتمبر وما تلاها.
في الفصل الثاني رؤى نقدية لمقولات الديمقراطية والدعوات الأمريكية للإصلاح في العالم العربي وأهدافها ومراميها البعيدة.
في الفصل الثالث نناقش الحرب الأمريكية على العراق، ومقدمات هذه الحرب وهل هي حرب مقنعة للرأي العام العربي والعالمي بعد ظهور عدم صدقية التهمة الأمريكية بامتلاك النظام السابق لأسلحة الدمار الشامل.
في الفصل الرابع والأخير كان عن أزمة العلمانية في الغرب كمشكلة غربية، وما هي الفكرة العلمانية كمصطلح ومضمون؟ وهل تتسامح العلمانية مع الاختلاف والتباين؟ وأزمة حجاب المسلمات الفرنسيات وتداعياتها.
