الكتاب هو عبارة عن مسرحية إيمائية موسيقية مشمومة مذاقة بطلتها كارمن، وهي غجرية تمارس مهناً مختلفة أبرزها العمل في معمل للسجائر، والرقص، وكشف الطالع. جذابة، جميلة، شعرها أسود فاحم طويل ذات عينين واسعتين، طويلة، ممشوقة القامة رشيقة الحركات بالرغم من امتلاء جسمها قليلاً، تفوح مع حضورها رائحة عطر الفواكه في صالة العرض. لذا كانت المسرحية مشمومة، إذ تعمل روائح العطور مع الروائح الأخرى التي تفوح من الصالة في أثناء العرض على إثارة حاسة الشم لدى المتفرجين، والمسرحية موسيقية فهي تمتع حاسة السمع عند المشاهدين بالموسيقى وإيمائية لأنها تثير حاسة البصر فيهم بالتغيير الجسماني الإيمائي ومناظر الديكور والأضواء، ومذاقة لأن المأكول والمشروب الخاص الذي يوزع على المتفرجين يعمل على تحريك حاسة الذوق لديهم مما يؤدي بالنتيجة إلى الاندماج الكلي للمتفرج بالموضوع والأحداث المعروضة بعيداً عن تغريب برتولد برخت.
