يضم هذا الكتاب دراسة تعرض سيرة شاعر الغزل وتتناول أخباره وشعره وتحلل فنه، كما يتضمن الكتاب النصوص الكاملة المحققة لأخبار عمر الواردة في كتاب "الأغاني"...
بالإضافة إلى ذلك احتوى الكتاب النصوص الكاملة والمحقّقة والمشروحة لقصائد عمر كما وردت في ديوانه وخارجه، وقد رأى الدكتور فاروق سعد أن بوضعه ديوان عمر بن أبي ربيعة من جديد بين يدي القارئ المعاصر، يقدّم محاولة جديدة في تقريب نصوص التراث إليه - وهذه المرّة النصوص الشعريّة - بتنسيقها، وعرضها، في قوالب سهلة التناول دون المسّ بحرفيتها المحقّقة.
حيث قال ممّا قاله في عمر وفي شعره: "وإذا كان عمر بن أبي ربيعة هو زعيم الغزلين في العصر الأموي، فيجب أن يكون زعيم الغزل في الأدب العربي كله"، وطالما أن إنقطاعه عن السياسة مصدر خير للمؤرخ الذي يريد أن يدرس الحياة الأدبيّة والإجتماعية في الحجاز - على حدِّ تعبيره أيضاً في مقاله الآنف الذكر - "لأنَّه لن يجد في شعره هذه الأهواء السياسيّة التي تلبس الحق بالباطل أحياناً وتظهر الخطأ مظهر الصواب أحياناً أخرى".
