بين دفتي هذا الكتاب, نظرات وآراء بعض الرحالة والمستشرقين من أعلام الغرب والشرق حول الروضة الحسينية المقدسة في كربلاء المقدسة وأوصافهم لها.
وقد يتساءل البعض, ما أهمية الوقوف على أراء هؤلاء الرحالة والمستشرقين, طالما أن تلك الروضة الحسينية لها ما لهل من المكانة والمنزلة في نفوس المحبين. وما قاله هؤلاء الرحالة والمستشرقون لن يغير شيئاً في قناعات هؤلاء المحبين.
لكن أهمية نقل مواقف وآراء ودراسات أولئك الرحالة والمستشرقين تقع في أمور.
الأول: إبراز أهمية تلك الروضة, عند الشعوب وأقوام آخرين, غير موالين لإمام الحسين عليه السلام, إذ كانت مقصداً لهؤلاء في رحلاتهم واستكشافاتهم, فكتبوا عنها الكثير, ووصفوا بعض ما يجري فيها, سواء كانوا منصفين في ذلك أم لا.
الثاني: ن المفيد معرفة آراء ودراسات أولئك الرحالة والمستشرقين ونظراتهم لتلك الروضة, والاطلاع على ما كتبوا عنا إيجاباً أم ساباً, لتأكيد الإجابي منها, ومناقشة السلبي منها وتصحيحه.
الثالث: التعرف على أولئك الرحالة والمستشرقين, خاصة أن بينهم كتاب, وعسكريون, وسياسيون, ومؤرخون ومن الملاحظة أن البعض منهم كان موضوعياً ودقيق في تعبيره, وقدم ملاحظات مهمة كشف فيها صفحات مهمة من تاريخ المرقاد الشريفة.
لقد أقدم الدكتور جليل عطية على جميع هذه الآراء والمواقف من كتاب تاريخ المرقاد الحسينية بأجزائه المتعددة, والذي هو باب من أبواب الموسوعة الكبرى دائرة المعارف الحسينية الدكتور محمد صادق محمد الكرباسي. ووضعها في كتاب مستقل وعلق عليها, وقدم لها.
