فالمستشرقون الثقافيون، بضمنهم الرسامون والكتّاب، هم أولئك الذين يستمدون إلهامهم من الشرق. أما المستشرقون العلميون فهم المتخصصون باللغات والثقافات الشرقية، لتمييزهم عن ”الكلاسيكيين“، المتخصصين باللغات والثقافات الكلاسيكية (اللاتينية واليونانية). ونظرا لأن مثل هذا المستشرق أكثر من مجرد متخصص باللغات، فقد كان إنسانيا يُفترض إنه يمتلك معرفة حقيقية معمقة لواحدة أو أكثر من ثقافات المشرق ويكرس نفسه لدراسة اللغات والآداب الشرقية في الماضي والحاضر، فضلا عن المعالم الثقافية الأخرى في ميداني الأدب والآثار، ويُفترض كذلك إن بحثه عن المعرفة الرصينة يميزه عن غيره من المستشرقين الثقافيين، الذين كانوا أنصارا متحمسين للمشرق.
