يقدم هذا الكتاب مختارات من صور القرن التاسع عشر وأوائل القرن العشرين المتواجدة في أرشيف مدينة القديس بطرسبيرج عن مدينة نجارى، التي هي في الأصل من أقدم وأجمل المدن في آسيا الوسطى. والتي دخلت الإسلام سنة 709 ميلادية، لتصبح بعد ذلك مركزاً للباحثين والدارسين المسلمين الورعين. وبالرجوع إلى ما تكشف عليه هذه الصور نقول أنها تسجل تفاصيل أهم المعالم المعمارية في مدينة نجارى.
كما تقدم ملامح عن حياة أهالي بخاري اليومية وطريقة احتفالهم بالأعياد، بالإضافة إلى كشفها عن "جوانب" المضيئة والمظلمة في حياة نبلاء بخاري، وهي حياة ذهبت دون عودة. وهي بما تقدم من معلومات ومعالم تعد من أهم الوثائق المبكرة لفن التصوير، ولأنها أيضاً سجل مزيد لإحدى مناطق أواسط آسيا قبل ضمها إلى الاتحاد السوفييتي سابقاً.
