شهدت سمرقند منذ أن شيدت في القرن السادس أو السابع قبل الميلاد فترات من الرخاء والانحطاط، أقام صناعها المهرة العلاقات التجارية التي امتدت إلى حدود الصين، وحارب قائدها العسكري العظيم تيمورلنك بلاد الفرس وسوريا والهند، وأكثر ما تعرض به سمرقند هو أنها مركز العلوم الإسلامية والعمارة الإسلامية. التقطت هذه الصور المجموعة في هذا الألبوم في فترة مهمة ما بين سنة 1872 والتسعينات من نفس القرن، إثر غزو قوات القيصر سنة 1868، وقبل الحكم السوفييتي الذي نتج عنه تدمير الكثير من العالم الإسلامية. وهي تعود بملكيتها إلى مراكز أرشيف روسية عديدة معظمها في مدينة بطرسبيدج. وقد قام بالتقاطها مصورون روس وأجانب، من المستشرقين والرحالة والعسكريين.
