في ديوانه الشعري "ملحق حمورابي السري" يقترح ماهر شرف الدين تاريخ آخر (شعري) يتأسس على التاريخ المدوَن أو على الحقائق التاريخية التي تم التعارف عليها أو التواطؤ في شأنها، أو كما يقول: "إعادة تشكيل شخصيات التاريخ نفسياً، وذلك من خلال افتراضات عكس المألوف، حول شخصيات تاريخية بعينها بأن يتم تحويل سقراط الفيلسوف مثلاً إلى شخص عادي، وفيلسوف المعرَة الأعمى إلى مبصر "أو كلًما قامت تعوَد ناظري/ أن يستبيح ظلام ثوب ساحر؟/ ليراه مخبولاً ببعض ملامح/ ويزوج سيقان يقصَ مشاعري(...)" أوأن يناجي (الحلاَج) أمه كطفل جائع بدل ميت "ردَي غطائي، قد تجمد جسمي/ أنا نائم فوق الثرى يا أمَي/ أنا طفلك الحسَاس يرقد جائعاً/ فوق الرصيف، وأنت لم تهتميَ/(...)". وهلم جرا، وهذه الفكرة جاءت وليدة عام من العزلة فرضها الشاعر على نفسه في غرفة مع ثمانين شخصية تاريخية "سجنت معها (على ما يقول) في ذاتي المريضة". أو كما يعبر عن عمله في العتبة النصية للمجموعة "هذا الديوان هو ترجمة لذلك الملحق السري عبر سير شعراء عرب اعدت ابناتهم في تربة الذات".
ومن الشخصيات التاريخية الذين يأتي الشاعر على ذكرهم في هذا الديوان: "المتنبي"، "امرؤ القيس"، "مالك بن الريب"، علي بن الجهم"، "ابن عربي"، "الأعشى"، "الشريف الرضي"، "المعري"، "جميل بثينة"،.... وآخرون.
