إن اللغة العربية مشحونة بألفاظ أعجمية كثيرة، ولا غرو في ذلك فإن القبائل البسيطة في معيشتها وسياستها متى خالطت الأمم الغربية المتمدنة أدخلت لا محالة ألفاظاً أعجمية إلى لغتها. وهذا ما جرى مع العرب فإنهم لم يزالوا مع مرور الأزمان خاضعين للبابليين والمصريين والفرس واليونان والروم. وكانوا قبائل شتى متفرقة يخالطون جميع الأقوام المجاورين لم. فإن لخماً وجذاماً كانوا مجاورين لأهل مصر والقبط، وقضاعة وغسان وإياد كانوا مختلطين مع الراميين والعبرانيين، وتغلب واليمن كانوا بالجزيرة مجاورين لليونان. وبكر للهند والفرس. وأهل اليمن كانوا مختلطين مع الهنود والحبشة. وسكان صحارى الجزيرة والعراق كانوا مخالطين للنبطيين والفرس وغيرهم لغيرهم.
إذاً فأدخل العرب في لغتهم من لغات هذه الأقوام ألفاظاً كثيرة. ولكن اللغة التي حازت قصبة السبق في أعارتها اللغة العربية ألفاظاً كثيرة هي الفارسية. وليس فقط القبائل المجاورة للفرس بل القبائل البعيدة أيضاً فهم كلمات كثيرة لا يضمها حصر. هذا وإن العرب قد أبقوا بعض الألفاظ الأعجمية على صورتها الأصلية، وبعضها غيّروها قليلاً، وأكثرها صحفوها أو جعلوا فيها القلب والإبدال، ولهذا صار البحث في تحقيق أصل الألفاظ المعرفة من أصعب وأدق المباحث اللغوية.
من هنا جاءت فكرة هذا المعجم الذي عني بالألفاظ الفارسية المعربة، حيث عمد واضع هذا المعجم إلى إيراد الكلمة المعربة بلفظها مبيناً أصلها ومعناها وكاشفاً عن اللغات التي استعيرت منها هذه الكلمة. وتجدر الإشارة إلى أن المعجم شمل ألفاظاً معربة من اللغات التالية إلى جانب الفارسية: التركية، الكردية، الآرامية، العبرانية، اليونانية، اللاتينية، السانسكريتية، الحبشية، الجرمانية، الإنكليزية، الفرنسية، الإيطالية، الروسية، والأرمنية.
