هذا مختصر في علم اللغة جمعه المؤلف من كتاب الصحاح للإمام العالم الجوهري رحمه الله تعالى, وقد اقتصر فيه على ما لابد لكل عالم فقيه, أو حافظ, أو محدث, أو أديب من معرفته وحفظه: لكثرة استعماله وجريانه على الألسن مما هو الأهم فالأهم خصوصاً ألفاظ القرآن العزيز والأحاديث النبوية, واجتنب فيه عويص اللغة وغريبها طلباً للاختصار وتسهيلاً للحفظ. كما ضم إليه فوائد كثيرة من تهذيب الأزهري وغيره من أصول اللغة الموثوق بها. وانطلاقاً من هذه الأهمية المتميزة لمختار الصحاح, صدرت له طبعات كثيرة, غير أن ما يؤخذ على معظمها إن لم يكن جميعها كثرة أخطائها وأغلاطها. وبغية تدارك هذه الأخطاء حاول المؤلف في هذا الإصدار الجديد لمختار الصحاح أن يقدم لقارىء العربية طبعة منقحة مدققة, والرجوع الى أمهات المعاجم العربية, لتحقيق أكبر قدر ممكن من التوثيق والتحقيق.
