حظي "مختار الصحاح" منذ أواخر القرن التاسع عشر بأهمية لم يحظ بمثلها معجم سواه، فقد تداولته أيدي الطلاب على مختلف مستوياتهم بالشكل الذي وضعه فيه الشيخ محمد بن أبي بكر الرازي كما اختصره عن صحاح الجوهري تاركاً ترتيب مداخله حسب الترتيب التقليدي، أي بدءاً بحروف أواخر الكلمات. وتوالت طبعات "مختار الصحاح" وتزايد الإقبال عليه في المعاهد والمدارس بشكل حفز وزارة المعارف المصرية في العقد الثاني من هذا القرن إلى رعاية إصدار طبعة منه مرتبة حسي الترتيب الألفبائي ليسهل على الطلاب استعماله.
وانتشرت تلك الطبعة بأحجام متفاوته، وعلى مدى القرن العشرين تعددت المعاجم العربية وتنوعت لكن ظل لمختار الصحاح مكانه المرموق بينها، وذلك بفضل ميزاته المتعددة-فهو يجمع من مفردات اللغة العربية ما يحتاجه الطالب من مراحل دراسته الابتدائية والإعدادية والثانوية، وهو إلى وضوحه وسهولة متناولة يكاد لا يجاري في بعض المجالات وبخاصة من حيث معالجته لألفاظ القرآن الكريم والأحاديث النبوية وكتب التراث الفقهي والأدبي.
ونذكر المراجع أن الترتيب الألفبائي لمداخل المعجم هو للألفاظ المجردة من الزوائد، فإذا أراد كشف لفظة فليطلبها في باب الحرف الأول منها إن كانت مجردة، وإن كانت مزيدة فليجردها ولأن الزوائد ثم يطلبها في باب الحرف الأول مما بقي، أما الألفاظ التي يتوقع أن يصعب كل الطالب ردها إلى مشتقاتها فقد ذكرت في مواقعها ألفبائياً حيث ردت إلى جذورها المجردة للمراجعة.
ولأهمية هذا المصنف عمدت "مكتبة لبنان ناشرون" إلى إصدار هذه الطبعة المميزة عن كل ما سبقها من طبعات وذلك لخدمة القارئ والطالب والمراجع في شتى أنحاء الوطن العربي، فعمدت إلى إخراج هذه الطبعة بلونين أحمر واسود وذلك لإبراز مداخله وتبيانها بحيث يسهل الرجوع إليها تسيراً لاستعمال المعجم وتوفيراً لوقت المراجع، كما سعوا إلى إصدار هذه الطبعة، والتي جاءت بحجم الجيب وذلك ليسهل حملها من مكان لآخر.
