شغل مفهوم الشخصية الفلسطينية اهتماماً واسعاً ومستمراً في النشاط الثقافي الفكري في الساحة العربية وغالباً ما اختزل الفكر ذلك المفهوم إلى وجه واحد يساير المرحلة التي يمرّ بها الشعب الفلسطيني-النضال الوطني والكفاح المسلح-وتحول ذلك الاختزال في معاينة النتاجات الإبداعية في الأدب والفن، إلى تبسيط العلاقة بين الشخصية الثقافية المبدعة والشخصية الجمعية للشعب أو للقوى السياسية التي تعلن مسؤوليتها عنه وقيادتها له. وأخذ الأدبي يفتش عن مفهوم التعبير عن الشخصية الفلسطينية، في استنساخ ذلك النتاج ومقارنته مع صورة مقررة في الوعي السائد، والحكم عليه بناءً على ذلك، إما تبنياً كاملاً وتجسيداً إعلاميا وإعلانياً فائقين، أو حكماً بالإعدام بتهمة الخروج على ثوابت الصورة التي للشخصية الفلسطينية، وكان جبرا في نظر نقاد الأدب، والكتاب النظريين والايديولوجيين أحد رموز الخروج عن خصوصية الشخصية الفلسطينية.
وتبرئة له من هذه التهم التي وجهت إليه وضع هذا الكتاب الذي يبحث في إشكالية النظر النقدي لجبرا، ومن موضوعه الشخصية الفلسطينية في رواياته. وقد قسّم المؤلف موضوعات كتابه على ثلاثة فصول عرض فيها: قيود الايديولوجيا على الأدب، عسف الايديولوجيا في نقد روايات جبرا هذا في الفصل الأول، أما الفصل الثاني فقد خصصه للحديث عن الشخصيات الفلسطينية في روايات جبرا، وفي الفصل الثالث تحدث عن الشخصية الفلسطينية في الرواية-تكامل وتنوع أم تماثل وتكرار سحر خليفة-جبرا... وقد ألحق الكتاب بخاتمة تضمنت لمحة عن حياة المبدع الكبير جبرا، وقائمة بأعماله الكاملة-الترجمات-الشعر-كتب النقد الأدبي والفني-المذكرات-الروايات-القصص-المقالات.
