أبداً لم يكن همي أو هاجسي أن يخلص القارئ المحايد إلى محبة أو كراهية هذه الشخصية، وإنما كان هاجسي الوحيد أن يخلص إلى تصور تترابط في ضوئه مجريات الأمور. فشخصية الشيشكلي كانت وما تزال مثاراً للجدل... ففي بعض تصرفاته كان متهوراً.. وفي بعضها الآخر كان حكيماً من مدرسة زهير بن أبي سلمى.. ولست في صدد إخراجه من قبره أو محاكمته.
حاولت أن أضع القارئ في مناخات الحياة السياسية في سورية في نهايات الأربعينات والنصف الأول من الخمسينات، فعرضت فعالية القوى السياسية وقدرتها على تحريك الشارع، ودفع جماهيره غلى ممارسة دورها في وضع حد لرعونة الحاكم وتسلطه.
وقد حفلت هذه المناخات السياسية بالإضرابات ومظاهرات الاحتجاج، والمنشورات السياسية والصحافة المعارضة.
اعتنت مادة الكتاب بعرض بعض وقائع الحياة اليومية ذات العلاقة بحياة المسؤولين آنذاك، والطريفة أحياناً، والمضحكة المبكية أحياناً أخرى، وقد تسقطتها من أفواه الناس الذين عاشوا في تلك الفترة، وقد أسبغت هذه الوقائع روح الدعابة على الكتاب في مواضع كثيرة، لأنها صادرة عن روح الشعب ووجدانه، فهي تعكس ردود فعل المجتمع على أخطاء السياسيين من جهة، وتعكس روح الشعب المتطلعة إلى التخلص من أنانية الأفراد وتحكمهم من وجهة أخرى.
ينضاف إلى وقائع الحياة اليومية الطريفة ما زودت به الكتاب من الصور الكاريكاتيرية المعبرة عن سياسة تلك الأيام، فهي في نظري شهادات لا تقل أهمية عن الشهادات المكتوبة، بل تتميز عنها في اقتناص اللحظة الحرجة وإبداعها في لوحة قابلة لأن تقرأ وتفسر على مستويات مختلفة.
