في كتابه هذا يقص الدكتور فؤاد العادل / الوزير الأسبق للثقافة والإعلام في سورية . قصة بلد جديرة بأن تُستعاد وتُقرأ. إنها "قصة سورية بين الإنتخاب والإنقلاب". العنوان الذي اختاره المؤلف لكتابه مذكرات عاشها تؤرخ للفترة ما بين 1942-1962 داخل البلاد وخارجها وقرر أن ينقلها إلى الجيل الجديد خوفاً على الوطن وصوناً للذاكرة.
سيجد القارىء لهذا الكتاب وثائق سرية مثيرة ومذهلة عن تاريخ سورية بين فترتي الوحدة والإنفصال، ومذكرات سياسية بدأ المؤلف بتدوينها في العام 1968م، في الرياض كما يقول في المقدمة "وقصة هذه المذكرات أنني كنت قد عدت دولة خالد العظم في مرضه الأخير يرحمه الله، وبرفقتي العميد مطيع السمان، وكان مسجى في صالة فندق حجار بسوق الغرب بعاليه في لبنان، فتمنى عليّ دولته تدوين الفترة بين الوحدة والإنفصال، إذ كنت خير شاهد حي على وقائعها وأحداثها المعاشة (...). وبدأت أدوّن أحداث مذكراتي هذه، وفي إحدى ليالي شهر نيسان من عام 1965م، هبط علينا الأخ الصديق شهيد الصحافة صاحب جريدة (الحياة) الأستاذ كامل مروة، فطلب مني شيئاً للقراءة، فاستحلفته إن أنا أعطيته مذكراتي المخطوطة ألا يجتزىء منها شيئاً للنشر، فأقسم على ذلك ... وفي صبيحة اليوم التالي نزل متأخراً إلى صالة الطعام، وقال لي: لقد أسهرتني مذكراتك الليل كله، ولعمري أنه لم يصغ مثلاً يراع سياسي عربي من قبل (...) وصفوة القول إنني أهدي هذه المذكرات لرجالات سورية الميامين، الذين صنعوا بكفاحهم معجزة الجلاء عن سورية، فكوفئوا بأن شردهم ظلم ذوي القربى في كل أفق، وتحت كل سماء !!؟".
يتألف الكتاب من مقدمة بقلم محمد مفيد بن عزة الخيمي عرّف فيها بالمؤلف وأعماله/ مؤلفاته ولمحات من سيرة حياته، يتبع ذلك الباب الأول ويضم عشرة فصول ومنها: حديث عن معركة الوحدة، وانحرافات الوحدة مع الشقيقة مصر وانتفاضة ايلول عام 1961م، ونكسة 28 آذار ونسف الشرعية. أما الباب الثاني فيضم خمسة فصول ومنها: مبررات الثورة العسكرية: آثارها ونتائجها، وسبيلنا السوي إلى الوحدة، ونظرات في الإشتراكية والعدالة الإجتماعية. يبقى أن نذكر أن هذا الكتاب قد أنجز بتاريخ 3 كانون الثاني عام 1965م وأعيد تدقيقه وصياغته في 18/9/2000م.
