فجأة تحين من لطيفة إلتفاته نحو الباب، ظل طويلاً يتهادى له ملامح شرقية وفجأة بدا الشاب كأنه يتجه إليها. لأول مرة تقف لطيفة أمامه وجهاً لوجه، إنه هو لكنه هذه المرة أجمل. وهذه المرة تحدق فيه مذهولة، تتشرب بذلته الكحيلة، وحبات المطر التي تبرق على شعره الأسود اللامع كأنها حبات ألماس. مسح الرجل على شعره وبدا كأنه غير مصدق للمرة الثالثة يصادفها. فمن يصدق؟ أما لطيفة فقد أخفت الفرحة التي ضرجت وجنتيها وهي تتساءل عما جاء به الآن، كأن لم تكفه مطاردته لها في أحلامها، في حلها وترحالها، في يقظتنها ومنامها، حتى هنا، في أقصى مكان من الأرض، يطلع في دربها، فتصير كالريشة في مهب الريح تتقاذفها الأهواء لتعرفها بهذا الشاب الغريب، وتسلمها إلى جماله الطاغي. عندما خرجت لطيفة كانت السماء لا تزال تمطر، وبدت لطيفة تنوح في صمت السماء تبكي ودموعي حبيسة. وتموج السؤال في صدرها كما في السماء، من هي بنت المطر؟ وتموج صوت الساب الغريب، بنت المطر كائن صغير وجميل لونه أحمر ولا يخرج إلا بعد سقوط المطر. بنت المطر في أي مكان بشارة بالخير. وهذه الفتاة لطيفة ذكرتني ببنت المطر التي كنا نراها صغاراً لطيفة بشارة خير. وهذا هو الحب.
