يتحدث "كتاب الغيبة" لشيخ الطائفة "أبي جعفر محمد بن الحسن الطوسي" عن غيبة صاحب الزمان - الإمام المهدي - وسبب غيبته، والعلة التي لأجلها طالت غيبته، وامتداد استتاره، مع شدة الحاجة إليه...، ووقوع الهرج والمرج، وكثرة الفساد في الأرض، وظهوره في البر والبحر، ولِمَ لمْ يظهر، وما المانع منه، وما المحوج إليه. والجواب عن كل ذلك.
وعلى هذا يكون كتاب الغيبة مبسوطاً في هذا المعنى، يجيب فيه الطوسي على كل ما يسأل في هذا الكتاب من الأسئلة المختلفة، مع تذييلها بطرف من الأخبار الدالة على صحة ما يذكره، ليكون تأكيدا لصحة ما يذكره من الأخبار عن الكلام في الغيبة.
تتعدد محاور الكتاب ولكنها جميعها تدور حول غيبة إمام الزمان نذكر من عناوينها: في الكلام في الغيبة، نص الإمام الكاظم على إمامة الرضا عليه السلام، الجواب على احتمال التشكيك في ولادة المهدي عليه السلام، رد سائر الفرق المخالفة للإمامية في الحجة (عج) ، في ذكر علة غيبة الإمام عن أوليائه، في الروايات الدالة على خروجه، في ذكر العلة المانعة لصاحب الأمر من الظهور، ذكر طرف من العلامات الكائنة قبل خروجه، في ذكر طرف من صفاته ومنازله وسيرته عليه السلام ... الخ.
