يتناول هذا الكتاب تاريخ النقود وتطورها، أو قصة النقود كيف ظهرت وكيف تطورت، وكيف عاش الإنسان قبل معرفته للنقود، حيث كانت المقايضة سلعة بسلعة عندما ظهرت بعض الصعوبات من أهمها عدم توافق رغبات الأطراف، عندها ظهرت السلعة الوسيطة حيث حددت سلعة معينة تكون قيمة لبقية المواد وفي العراق القديم كانت الحبوب وخاصة (الشعير) والمعادن وخاصة (الفضة) سلعة وسيطة في حين كانت السلعة الوسيطة في مصر هو حيوان الثور والسلاح، كذلك كان الأمر في بلاد اليونان ثم ظهرت صعوبات أخرى عندما فضل إستخدام المعادن.
"الفضة" فكان الشيقل وحدة للوزن ثم أصبح في عهد الملك الآشوري سنحاريب 704- 681 قبل الميلاد وحدة نقد عندما أصبح شيقل ونصف شيقل، ثم انتقل هذا الإبتكار إلى الليدين، والذين بدورهم طوروا النقود وعنهم انتقلت إلى بقية أرجاء المعمورة، حيث نجد أن كل دولة أو مدينة كبيرة اتخذت شعاراً معيناً نقشته على نقودها، ومن ذلك الوقت أصبحت النقود وثائق مهمة في التاريخ.
