إن الخط والكتابة هما من سمات الحضارة الإنسانية وكان لظهورهما شأن كبير في حياة الإنسان، فيمكن القول أن الكتابة عندما ظهرت لأول مرة قد وضعت الحد الفاصل بين عصور طويلة وسحيقة عاشها الإنسان قبل معرفته للكتابة، وقد عرفت تلك العصور بعصور ما قبل التاريخ، إذن الكتابة هي التاريخ، ولا زالت الدراسات الآثارية التي تبحث بعصور ما قبل التاريخ من خلال المقارنة والإستنتاج، في حين العصور التاريخية، وخاصة بعد معرفة الإنسان للكتابة منذ الألف الرابع قبل الميلاد، أي قبل ستة آلاف سنة من الآن.
واعتمدت الدراسات على حل رموز الكتابة المسمارية خلال العصور السومرية والأكدية والبابلية والأشورية، وقد قامت بعد الأشوريين حضارات عرفت بالحضارات العربية منذ القرن الثاني قبل الميلاد مثل الحضر في الشمال الغربي من العراق وقد كتبوا بالخط الآرامي حيث تميز هذا الخط بمميزات خاصة مغايرة للخط المسماري الذي كان سائداً قبل الخط الآرامي وجاء بعده الخط النبطي الذي انحدر عن الخط الآرامي وفي نهايات فترة الأنباط ظهرت بدايات الخط العربي وهو موضوعنا الرئيسي.
احتوى هذا الكتاب على تسعة فصول رئيسية، تناول الأول منها أصل وتطور الخط العربي قبل الإسلام وأنواعه، بينما احتوى الفصل الثاني النصوص العربية خلال القرن السادس الميلادي، فيما تناول الفصل الثالث آراء المؤرخين في أصل الخط العربي، وتناول الفصل الرابع الخط المسند في اليمن وجنوب الجزيرة العربية، بينما تناول الفصل الخامس الخط العربي في الإسلام، بينما تناول الفصل السادس الشكل والإعجام في الخط العربي، بينما تناول الفصل السابع الخط في العصر العباسي، بينما تناول الفصل الثامن الخط العربي في العصر العثماني، بينما تناول التاسع شرح لوحات فنية من الخطوط.
