يتناول هذا الكتاب إشكالية العلاقة بين العلمانية والدين والديمقراطية، وما يطبع هذه العلاقة من وجوه التركيب والتعقيد. فبعد الوقوف عند السياقات التاريخية والمفهومية لنشأة العلمانية في الإطار الغربي، يعرج على البحث في دلالتها العامة في مجال التداول العربي الإسلامي، ثم يخلص من بعد ذلك إلى دراسة العلاقة بين العلمانية والديمقراطية، من الناحية النظرية ومن زاوية الخبرة التاريخية الحية.
لم يكن المطلب من هذا البحث تقصي مواطن التعارض أو التوافق بين الإسلام والعلمانية، على نحو ما هو غالب على الأدبيات العربية الغربية، وإنما بيان الطابع المركب للإسلام والعلمانية على السواء، فضلاً عن جلاء الخاصية المعقدة لهذه العلاقة من الناحيتين التاريخية والنظرية.
أما ما يشاع عن العلاقة التلازمية بين العلماني والديمقراطي فسيري القارئ أن الكاتب رجح ما هو خلاف ذلك. فالديمقراطية، من جهة نظره، ليست إلا آليات إجرائية وظيفية، قد تصلح لعلاج معضلة الاستبداد والتسلط السياسي، وهي ليست عقيدة صارمة منازعة للعقائد والأديان، ولا حلا سحرياً يتجاوز سنن العمران وقوانين الاجتماع السياسي. ومن ثم تظل الديمقراطية قابلة للتعديل والتغيير والاستدراك وفق مقتضيات الاجتماع السياسي.
ليس الغرض في هذا البحث تقريظ العلمانية، أو إثبات تهافت العلمانيين، بل هو محاولة في الفهم والتفكيك بغرض فتح آفاق جديدة للنظر والتفكير في قضايا أضحت مؤثرة في حياتنا وأنماط اجتماعنا الحديث.
