تعد العلاقات والمبادلات التجارية الشريان الحيوي لإقتصاديات بلدان العالم، كونها تمثل القوة الفاعلة في تأطير العلاقات السياسية، وتعكس التخطيط الإيجابي لإقتصاديات دول العالم، وعلى الرغم من أهمية الجانب الإقتصادي والتجاري بشكل خاص، فإنه لم ينل ما يستحقه من إهتمام من لدن المهتمين والمؤرخين، فضلاً عن الباحثين الأكاديميين مقارنة بإهتمامهم بجوانب العلاقات السياسية.
ومن هنا، تأتي أهمية دراسة تأريخ العلاقات التجارية بين العراق والدول المجاورة، ولا سيما الجارة الشمالية تركيا، ذات الموقع الإستراتيجي والإمكانات الإقتصادية والبشرية المميزة، وإدراك كلا الجانبين العراق والتركي لأهميتها، وإيجاد السبل لتطويرها، بما يخدم مصالحها المشتركة على كافة الصُعُد، ولا سيما القطاع التجاري، فضلاً عن رغبة الباحث الشخصية في دراسة تأريخ العلاقات التجارية بين العراق وتركيا، والتي كان وراء رغبته في دراستها عنواناً لرسالته.
تضمن الكتاب أربعة فصول وخاتمة، كان الأول منها سياسة الإصلاح العثمانية وإنعكاساتها على العلاقات التجارية بين الولايات العراقية والتركية حتى عام 1925م؛ وتناول الفصل الثاني ضمن مباحثه الأربعة دراسة العلاقات التجارية بين العراق وتركيا للفترة (1926- 1945).
واهتم الفصل الثالث في مباحثه الأربعة بدراسة العلاقات التجارية بين العراق وتركيا في مرحلة فيما بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية حتى عام 1958م، أما الفصل الرابع والاخير عبر مباحثه الثلاثة، فقد اهتم بدراسة، أهم المشكلات والعقبات التي واجهت العلاقات التجارية بين العراق وتركيا.
