لقد شهدت العلاقات الأمريكية التركية تحولات مهمة، بعد عام 2002، أي بعد صعود حزب العدالة والتنمية للسلطة في تركيا، إلان التغير المهم هو الذي حدث نتيجة التغيرات في المنطقة العربية عام 2011، فتلك الأحداث اقترنت بالإضطراب والتحول في المنطقة العربية بفعل تفاعل عوامل داخلية وخارجية انتهت إلى تغيير أنظمة حكم مصر وتونس وليبيا، وظهور مؤشرات عدم الإستقرار في سوريا واليمن، ولم تكن الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية أو تركيا بعيدين عن بعض تلك الأحداث، وتطورات العلاقات بين البلدين بعد عام 2011 أي أن أنها بدأت بوجود تنسيق بينهما وفقاً لما تقتضيه متطلبات التحالف الأمني والعسكري والسياسي، الا أن حجم التنسيق والتعاون بدأ يخفت تدريجياً بسبب إتجاه الأمريكية في عهد إدارة الرئيس باراك أوباما إلى تنفيذ سياسات تخدم إستراتيجيتها في الشرق الأوسط، وتجاهلت إحتياجات تركيا الأمنية والسياسية، وهو ما ظهر في العراق وسوريا، وأخذت الفجوة بين البلدين تتسع حتى وصلت إلى مراحل خطيرة عام 2016 - 2017، متعلقة بإندفاع تركيا نحو تطوير العلاقات مع روسيا، وعدم مراعاة الولايات المتحدة الامريكية لمتطلبات تركيا الأمنية في إنشاء منطقة أمنة في شمال سوريا وفي عدم تسليح أو نشر القوى الكوردية شمال شرق سوريا، وتسليم الداعية التركي المقيم في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية فتح الله غولن إلى السلطات التركية.
