تأخذ "الأنا" الشاعرة موقعها المحور في النص من حيث كونها تُدير دفّة تجربة الحب بمعناه الواسع "شهوة الحياة"، وذلك من خلال تعاملها مع الفن ممثلاً لحياة الذات، ومنظماً - بفعالية الخيال - عالمها في نسق عضوي، يلبي رغباتها الجامحة في تحقيق الوجود، وفي التعبير عن الرؤى، وفي التوق للخلود عن طريق بقاء الذكر بعد الموت.
وبُنيت هذه الدراسة على مدخل عام، وثلاثة فصول، أما المدخل العام (تشظي الأنا بين الحب، الموت، الفن) فقد ناقش فيه الكاتب علاقة الحب بالموت وعلاقة الحب بالموت والفن مفيداً من آراء فرويد في (الأنا) وغرائزها، ومن الأفكار الوجودية والفلسفية حول الفن والحياة؛ أما الفصل الأول (بشار ورؤيته للوجود) فكان محاولة للكشف عن رؤية الشاعر للوجود من خلال موقفه الفكري العام، والعوامل التي ساهمت في بلورة ذلك الموقف وتعزيزه، وأيضاً الكشف عن صلة الفن بحياة الشاعر، وطبيعة توجيه الفن للحب والحياة.
وأما الفصل الثاني (الزمان جوهر فكرة الحب والموت) فقد تناول فيه قوة الدهر وأشكالها: الموت، والليل، هذا من ناحية، ثم تناول مظاهر الزمن: الشيب والطلل، هذا من ناحية أخرى؛ وأما الفصل الثالث والأخير (الإتجاه الإنساني وإلتقاء الحب بالموت) فقد بُني على خمسة نماذج إنسانية هي: المحبوبة، الطيف، العاذل والواشي والرقيب، الصديق والنديم، الممدوح؛ وقد اتبع ذلك المدخل، وهذه الفصول الثلاثة بخاتمة تضمنت النتائج التي خرج بها الدراسة.
