للأعشى الكبير مكانته المتميزة في مصاف الشعراء المخضرمين الكبار الذي كان لشعره أصداء في شعر كل من أبو الطيب المتنبي وبشار بن برد وأبو نواس وأبو تمام. وعلى الرغم من ذلك فإن من المعاصرين ما أشاعوا من الأعشى وروّجوه، في المتداول من مصنفات تاريخ الأدب وكتب المنتخبات والمنتقيات، تلك الصورة التي تبديه سكيراً عاكفاً على الخمرة متهالك عليها، حتى أجّل، من فرط الشغف بها، في الهزيع الأخير من عمره، دخوله في الإسلام، أو تظهره مدّاحاً جوّالة يتّجر بالشعر ويتغنى به لدى الملوك والأمراء وأسياد القبائل وصغار الأشراف.
وفي هذا شرخ واضح بين تعامل القدامى والمعاصرين مع الأعشى وشعره مبعثه منهم الأولين لشعر منغرس فيهم، يدركون جماله وغاياته، والمعاصرين الذين يمتلكون مزيج فهم لهذا الشعر جاءهم من مصادر عدة أخطرها تلك المصادر الغربية التي لا تعير الدرس الجمالي أية أهمية.
ويذكر المطلعون على الكتابات النقدية والإبداعية التي عجّ بها النصف الأول من القرن العشرين، ما أدّى إليه التعلق بأذيال الرومنطيقية من هجوم مجاني على الشعر القديم عندما شرع أعلام مشهورون في الشعر والنقد إلى رميه بالافتقار إلى الخيال والعمق والصدق في ما كان ينطق به من تجربة الوجود ويمدح به أسياداً ظفروا من السيادة والفضائل جميعاً.
وفي هذا الكتاب يتجه الباحث إلى تجنب ما سقط وما يسقط فيه أكثر الدارسين، من استسهال إسقاط الاكتشافات المنهجية على الشعر القديم، ما لاءم منها خصائصه الفنية وما لا يلائم، ليرصد المناحي الجمالية الشعر للأعشى على ضوء المنهجية المعرفية التي انفتح عليها هذا العلم دون أن يعني ذلك إهمال الأخذ بالخصوصية التي ينفرد بها الشعر العربي.
