اختلف الناس في الأنبياء عليهم السلام، فقالت الشيعة الإمامية: لا يجوز عليهم شيء من المعاصي والذنوب، كبيراً كان أو صغيراً، لا قبل النبوة ولا بعدها، ويقولون في الأئمة مثل ذلك. وجوز أصحاب الحديث والحشوية على الأنبياء الكبائر قبل النبوة، ومنهم من جوزها في حال النبوة سوى الكذب فيما يتعلق بأداء الشريعة، ومنهم من جوزها كذلك في حال النبوة بشرط الاستسرار دون الإعلان، ومنهم من جوزها على الأحوال كلها، ومنعت المعتزلة من وقوع الكبائر والصغائر المستخفة من الأنبياء عليهم السلام قبل النبوة وفي حالها، وجوزت في الحالين وقوع ما لا يستخف من الصغائر ثم اختلفوا. فمنهم من جوز على النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الإقدام على المعصية الصغيرة على سبيل العمد، ومنهم من منع من ذلك وقال إنهم لا يقدمون على الذنوب التي يعلمونها ذنوباً، بل على سبيل التأويل.
والسيد المرتضى عندما ألف كتابه "تنزيه الأنبياء" وهو الذي بين أيدينا إنما أراد أن يدلي بدلوه في هذا الموضوع فقال معرفاً بكتابه مبيناً سبب تأليفه:
"سألت أحسن الله توفيقك، إملاء كتاب في تنزيه الأنبياء والأئمة عليهم السلام عن الذنوب والقبائح كلها، ما سمي منها كبيرة أو صغيرة والرد على من خالف في ذلك، على اختلافهم وضروب مذاهبهم. وأنا أجيب إلى ما سألت على ضيق الوقت، وتشعب الفكر، وابتدئ بذكر الخلاف في هذا الباب، ثم بالدلالة على مذهب الصحيح من جملة ما أذكره من المذاهب، ثم بتأويل ما تعلق به المخالف من الآيات والأخبار، التي اشتبه عليه وجهها، وظن أنها تقتضي وقوع كبيرة أو صغيرة من الأنبياء والأئمة عليهم السلام، ومن الله تعالى استمد المعونة التوفيق، وإياه أسأل التأييد والتسديد".
