إنّ الاستقرار والتوازن والاستمرارية هي أهداف يسعى كل مجتمع لتحقيقها، ولكن من أجل توافر هذه المعطيات لا بدّ من توافر ضوابط خاصة يمتلكها المجتمع، لضبط وتوجيه سلوك أفراده نحو الالتزام بقواعده ومعاييره، إلا أنّ هذه الضوابط تتعدد وتختلف من مجتمع لآخر بل حتى في المجتمع الواحد وذلك من حيث الشدة والصرامة. وقد اختلف العلماء حول تحديد أنواع الضبط الاجتماعي، ويرتبط تصنيف أنواع الضبط الاجتماعي وفقاً لوسائل الضبط ومضمونه وأهدافه.
وقد اهتم الكثير من الباحثين بدراسة الطرق والوسائل المختلفة التي تستخدم في عملية التنشئة الاجتماعية, ولكن الصعوبة التي تعترض الباحثين هي تحديد الأنواع المختلفة لأساليب المعاملة الوالدية, والتي يصعب حصرها لتعددها, واختلاف وجهات النظر حول أنسب الطرق التي يجب أن يتبعها الآباء مع أبنائهم.
ونجد أن أساليب المعاملة الوالدية يختلف حولها المختصون قبل الآباء في تحديد ما هي أنسب الأساليب التي يجب إتباعها مع الطفل لكي يتمتع بتوافق نفسي اجتماعي, وحتى تكون شخصيته سوية وخالية من أي اضطرابات, ولكن يتفق الجميع حول أهمية هذه الأساليب وتأثيرها على الطفل وتوافقه مع المجتمع.
