كلّما كان الظلامُ يلفُّ روابيَ القريةِ وسفوحَها، وصفيرُ الرياحِ يشتدُّ في الخارجِ، لم يكنْ، في تلك الأيّامِ، أجملُ من أن نتحلّقَ حولَ النارِ ونطلبَ من جدّتي أن تحكي لنا حكاية.
إنّ معظمَ قصصِ هذا الكتابِ لهو ممّا سمعتُه من أفواهِ الناسِ أو شهدتُه على مسرحِ الحياةِ، ولم أُدخلْ عليه من التعديلِ والتحويرِ في مجرى الأحداثِ إلا ما يقتضيه فنُّ كتابةِ القصّة. أما الأبطالُ فمنهم مَن رحلَ عن هذه الفانيةِ مخلِّفاً أثرَه الطيّبَ، ومنهم مَن هو اليومَ حيٌّ يُرزقُ وندعو له بطولِ العمر. وأما الأسماءُ فهي مستعارةٌ إلا القليلَ منها.
وَعليه، يضُمّ الكِتاب 8 قصص: حكايةُ الأبجدية، بَرَكة العجوز، الحُبّ الشقيّ، سامحني يا أبي، فستان العروس، قصرٌ وكلي، البيت المظلم، في القلب يا بلادي.
