"عندما يتوصل الإنسان إلى التحرر من المرأة يستطيع أن يقول أنه أضحى رجلاً" هكذا حدث نفسه بطل قصة "ليل الشقاء" الذي لم يذكر الكاتب يوسف حبشي الأشقر إسمه، كلما تذكر محبوبته "بييرين" التي انقطعت عن حبه، وانقطع عن حبها، وبعدما بات مدركاً "أن ما يجمعه بها اليوم ما هو سوى فكرة عن الإنسان الذي يكذب على نفسه قبل الآخرين، والذي يفتش، دون ملل، عن ملجأ يأويه متى ولج بابه".
وفي الرواية يبدو البطل كاتباً يعيش على حافة الذاكرة، يحاول الخروج من ماضيه بواسطة الكتابة "لماذا أكتب؟، وما جدوى الكتابة؟ عزاء مثل غيرها، كذب مثل غيرها. كذبة كبيرة أهرب إليها من الواقع، كما كنت أهرب إليها هي. لماذا أكتب؟ قد يكون ذلك لتقرأ هي يوماً ما أكتب وتعرف ما يجمعني بها ...". وعلى هذا تكون الرواية نوعاً من فلسفة الحبّ لرجل أدركه الحب ولم يحافظ عليه، ولم يتبقَ له سوى أوراق يدوّن عليها ما كان، ويحلم أن يكون. وقد نجح الكاتب الأشقر من خلال الرواية في التغلغل إلى نفسية الرجل وأفكاره، في حالاته المختلفة، فأفاض في عكس المشاعر والأحاسيس، ونحا منحاً رومانسياً جميلاً. وبهذا يتكامل السرد والحوار في روي الأحداث والسير بها نحو نهاياتها المرسومة. يضم الكتاب قصتين الأولى بعنوان ليل الشتاء، والثانية بعنوان البيت العتيق.
