يشكل هذا الكتاب قراءة في حياة وفلسفة الملا صدرا الفيلسوف الإشراقي المتخصص في علم الكلام الإسلامي، العلامة الذي درّس الفلسفة للطلاب المتوافدين عليه من شتى أنحاء إيران، إلا أنه لم يفوّت أية فرصة ممكنة، سواء في حضر أو في سفر، لكتابة الرسائل المختصرة والمفصلة في الفلسفة وبأشكال وقوالب شتى. لذلك ابدع لنا منظومة فلسفية متنوعة، وجد مفيدة، ومبرهنة، وذات صور وأهداف مختلفة، ومنها كتابه "الحكمة المتعالية" الذي يحتل مساحة كبيرة في هذا الكتاب، وهو يضم مباحث تُعنى بقضايا الوجود والماهية، ثم تنتقل مباحثه إلى "الحركة والزمن"، وكذلك "الإدراك والجوهر والعرض"، ويختص أحد اقسامه بإثبات وجود الله وصفاته، وينتهي ببحوث النفس الإنسانية ومواضيع الموت والمعاد. أما اللافت في هذا الكتاب هو أن موضوعاته موزعة على أربع مراحل من السير والسلوك الروحي المعنوي لدى العرفاء، وقد اعتبر المؤلف أن كل مرحلة منها سفراً يصل في نهايته إلى معنى الآخرة.
لذلك يرى المؤلف: أن هذا الكتاب في حقيقته موسوعة فلسفية ومجموعة ثرة لقضايا الفلسفة الإسلامية الهامة مرفقة بآراء الفلاسفة القدماء من زمن فيثاغورس إلى عهد الملاّ صدرا ومعالجتها ببراهين متينة غير مسبوقة، لهذا نراه يُعتمد كمادة دراسية في المستويات الفلسفية العليا بالحوزات العلمية.
يقسم الكتاب إلى قسمين: القسم الأول – الملاّ صدرا .. حياته وشخصيته وأعماله. القسم الثاني: مدرسة الملاّ صدرا الحكمة المتعالية ويضم العناوين: علم الوجود (الأنطولوجيا)، علم المعرفة (الإبستمولوجيا)، النفس والنشور، التفسير والهرمنوطيقا عند الملاّ صدرا.
