يمكن القول ان الأسلوبية بلاغة حديثة ذات شكل مضاعف: انها علم التعبير، وهي نقد للأساليب الفردية. لكن هذا التعريف لم يظهر إلا ببطء، وكذلك فإن العلم الجديد للأسلوب لم يعرف أهدافه ومناهجه إلا ببطء أيضاً. هناك ترابط منطقي بين الأسلوب والأسلوبية، فالأسلوب يعرّف ضمن حدوده بالسمة الخاصة لفعل من الأفعال وعلى هذا يمكن تصور الأسلوبية العامة دراسة للعلاقات بين الشكل وبين مجموع الأسباب الاخبارية ومثل هذه الدراسة لم تكن موضع تصور أبداً وبعيداً عن هذا وذاك وتبقى الأسلوبية كما وصفها الباحث في هذا الكتاب، دراسة للتعبير اللساني.
أما كلمة أسلوب، إذا ردّت إلى تعريفها الأصلي، فهي تعني طريقة للتعبير عن الفكر بوساطة اللغة. وحول الأسلوب والأسلوبية وحول هذا العلم الذي يبدو جديداً جاءت هذه الدراسة التي اتجه الباحث فيها أولاً إلى وضع مفهوم الأسلوب في منظوره التاريخي، وذلك لكي يفحص كيف يلد ببطء من أرث لا يزال فيه سجيناً، منتقلاً من ثم إلى فحص الحالة الراهنة لمشاكل علم الأسلوب، التي تبحث عن نفسها وعن تعريفها باسم الأسلوبية منذ نصف قرن.
