ينظر إلى الجغرافيا على أنها علماً واحداً وهو علم المكان، الذي يهتم بدراسة منظمة لسطح الأرض فينتقل من التضاريس إلى المناخ ثم النبات ثم الحيوان ثم الإنسان، وفي كل منها تعمل على توضيح الترابط بين العوامل المختلفة، هذه العوامل المختلفة لو تتبعنا مصادرها الأساسية لوجدناها تضم بين طياتها نواحي طبيعية وبشرية، ونظراً لذلك أصبحت الجغرافية البشرية إحدى الفروع الرئيسية للجغرافية التي تتناول دراسة العلاقة بين الإنسان ومحيطه، وهي تعنى أكثر ما تعنى بالظواهر والسياقات التي هي من صنع البشرية بدرجة أو بأخرى، ويكون تأثير الجوانب الطبيعية فيها في حدود دنيا.
ظهرت البدايات الأولى للجغرافية البشرية مع ظهور الإنسان فوق سطح الأرض، فقد تطلبت حياة الأمم والشعوب ظهور الزراعة وبناء القرى والمدن ومن ثم وضع القوانين والأنظمة التي تسهم في بناء المجتمع، كما رافق ذلك معرفة أعداد السكان ومدى توافقها مع الموارد الإقتصادية المتاحة ومدى مساهمتها في بناء الدولة من خلال قدرة السكان على الدفاع عنها وحمايتها من خطر الأعداء، وكل ذلك أدى إلى وضع النواة الأولى للجغرافية البشرية في الحضارات القديمة.
