انتشر الإسلام في جزيرة العرب وامتد نفوذه على أكثر أجزائها في عهد رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وبعد القضاء على الردّة في عهد الخليفة الراشد الصديق عليه السلام توحدت الجزيرة العربية، فكانت الفتوح الإسلامية بقيادة فرسان أشداء لا يهابون الموت، مسلحين بعقيدة ملكت عليهم أفئدتهم بالإيمان بالله ورسالة نبيّهم. إزاء هذا كله أراد مؤلف هذا الكتاب "عبد الجبار العبيدي" دراسة القيادة العسكرية (صانعة القرار)، وذلك لمعرفة الأسس النظرية والتطبيقية التي انتهجها هؤلاء في حياتهم ونالوا بها إما النصر وإما الشهادة. فكان اختياره لهذا العمل (القيادة العسكرية الإسلامية – بين النظرية والتطبيق – في عصر النبوة والعصر الراشدي) رغبة في خدمة الشريعة، والبحث عن أولئك الرجال الذين حملوا راية الإسلام بقوة وأمانة فكانوا القدوة الحسنة للأجيال على مرّ السنين.
وفي هذه الدراسة اقتصر المؤلف على إبراز بعض الأعمال الحربية من المعارك التي خاضها المسلمون جنوداً أو قادة لإظهار قيادتهم وقابلياتهم العسكرية، ويترافق ذلك بالإعتماد على اقرب الروايات إلى الواقع، والتي يمكن استنتتاجها من سير الحوادث الحربية وغير الحربية، ومن تواتر الروايات، ومن درجة الثقة بالمصدر الذي يروي الحوادث.
وبالإستناد إلى ما تقدم اشتملت الدراسة على ثلاثة فصول تكلم فيها المؤلف عن القيادة العسكرية عند العرب في الإسلام في تطبيق المبادىء الحربية، وأسس اختبار القائد والقيادة العسكرية الإسلامية والتطبيق العملي لمبادىء الدين في القتال والغاية منه.
