ولد إبراهيم في بيت فقير، لأب مستهتر مستبدّ وأمّ مستضعفة مقموعة، ينجب والده أربعة أولاد آخرين رغم ظروفهم العسيرة وغياب الإتفاق والتّوادّ بينهما.
يضطر إلى تحمّل المسؤولية والأعباء التي ألقى والده عن كاهله على كاهله، فيتخلّى شبه مكره عن دراسته كي ينتقل إلى الحياة العلميّة حيث كلّ ما ينتظره أعمال شاقّة بأجور زهيدة، إلى أن يسعفه الحظّ بخدمة حديقة الحكيم ربيع أين يقع في حبّ ابنته الحسناء زمرّد، من يتوهّم لنظراتها أنّها تبادله الشّعور، فينغمس في قصة عاطفيّة اخترقت حدود الصّمت دونما أن تقتحم حيال الصّوت، ساهياً بذلك عن مشاكل إخوته.
فضة مدبّرة بيت الحكيم، شابّة من عمر إبراهيم، لا تلبث شيئاً حتى تغرم بهذا الأخير حتّى وهو لا يعيرها أدنى إهتمام، تعيش ظروفاً قاسية هي الأخرى في بيت والديها ووسط أخوانها الشّافيات، والدها عازف على العود لا يحظى بإحترام والدتها ولا تقديرها، ذاك أنّ الوالدة لم تجن من فنّ زوجها شيئاً يدرأ عنها الحاجة والمقاساة.
يبقى أنّ الأجواء المنكوبة الّتي تطوّقها ليست ما يدعو فضّة إلى الإستسلام والإذعان لآراء أهل بدائيّة ونصوص مجتمع لا يثمّن المرأة إلا لو زوجة وأمّ، فتتمرد على الخطّة التي يرسمون لحياتها بدلاً عنها وتناضل في سبيل أحلامها... إلى أن تنال المنى.
