تعززت اللغة العربية على أيدي رواد من اللغويين، كان همهم الأول أن يعملوا على إحياء اللغة العربية وتقويم اللسان. وكانت غايتهم من ذلك إصلاح الأسلوب والمصطلح العربيين.
ومن بين هؤلاء الأب أنستاس ماري الكرملي الذي يعد محوراً مهماً للحركة اللغوية في عهده. فقد عمل جاهداً في سبيل تهذيب اللغة وتقريب متناولها، وخدم اللغة العربية بآرائه اللغوية المبثوثة في الكتب والمجلات والجرائد.
لم يسكت الكرملي عن نقد المعجمات القديمة والحديثة، ولم يصبر على ما رأى فيها من مأخذ وأوهام.
ولم تكن المعجمات القديمة ترضي ذوقه بما حوى أكثرها من حشو ومفردات وتراكيب، بالإضافة إلى الأخطاء والتصحيف. هذا الأمر دفع به إلى عبء القيام بدراسة معجمية مقارنة. أفاد منها الكثيرون. وكان له من مستدركاته على المعجمات القديمة والحديثة مادة كبيرة ضمها إلى معجمه المساعد.
وما سعت إليه هذه الدراسة هو توضيح آراء الأب أنستاس الكرملي في البناء المعجمي ساعية إلى التفصيل، والتدقيق في المسائل اللغوية التي كان المؤلف يتسقط معرفتها، ويبذل السعي للوقوف على زواياها وخباياها متحرياً المحافظة على اللغة العربية وعلى أصولها، آخذاً بالتطور بنا رآه من آراء في الاستعمال، وفهم للتعريب والمعربات.
وكان محيط المحيط أول معجم في اللغة وقع إلى أنستاس الكرملي في شبابه فعني بالتعليق عليه.
وبالنظر إلى أهميته فقد أخذت هذه الدراسة على عاتقها الإشارة إليه وإلى المآخذ التي أثيرت حول عمل الكرملي وذلك عبر الاعتماد على المراجع المتوفرة في هذا الإطار، وما تطمح إليه هذه الدراسة هو تقديم عمل مفيد لطلاب الدراسات العليا، ولكل باحث يريد التعمق في القضايا المعجمية واللغوية.
