تنطلق مشكلة البحث من قضية هامة ولدتها الظروف الحياتية الصعبة وغير الطبيعية متمثلة باحتلال العراق وما رافقه من فقدان الامن والتهجير والقتل على الهوية محدثاً تغييرات سريعة في مجالات الحياة كافة ادت الى انتشار حالات العجز والعزلة وفقدان المعنى واللامبالاة وإحساس الفرد بعدم جدوى وجوده وخوفه من المجهول والمستقبل وافتقاد الانتماء والضياع بدت على شرائح المجتمع المختلفة وبضمنها شريحة الشباب ممثلة بطلبة الجامعة، مما خلق مشاكل كثيرة أثرت سلباً على القيم والمعايير السائدة وأخذت اتجاهات العديد من الأفراد تتجه نحو اللااجتماعية، وبدا الشباب يتخلى عن روح الشعور بالمسؤولية وميلهم نحو عدم الالتزام بالكثير من المعايير والانظمة والقوانين وارتكاب المخالفات على اختلاف أنواعها وازدياد الروح العدوانية وبالتالي التمرد.
إن شعور طلبة الجامعة بان الطرق التي بدأت تفتح أبوابها وتحدد قواعدها للطموح والسلوك عادت تغلق أو تطمس معالمها نتيجة لتلك التغييرات المفاجئة الحاصلة في السياق السياسي والاجتماعي والاقتصادي مؤدية الى نشاة قيم جديدة وغير متجانسة. حيث وجد الفرد نفسه إزاء قيم ومعايير متضاربة يصعب التكيف معها مما ولد لديه إحساساً بالحيرة والتخبط والانسحاب من العلاقات الاجتماعية ممثلة بالعزلة ومن ثم الاغتراب، فلم تعد الأمور مستقرة ومحددة سلفاً بل هي مفتوحة أمام كل التوقعات غير المحسوبة من الربح والخسارة، إضافة الى الإحساس بغياب الهدف العام الواحد أدى الى انكفاء الكثير من أعضاء المجتمع داخل ذواتهم ومشكلاتهم الشخصية التي فقدت هي الأخرى امكانية حلها في أطر مشروعة ومتفق عليها من الجميع.
ولما كان أي بحث لا يتم الا بالشعور بمشكلة ما، فقد رأت الباحثة دراسة الاغتراب وعلاقته بالتمرد وقلق المستقبل لدى طلبة الجامعة. موضوع جدير بالدراسة في ظل هذه الظروف التي تمر بها البلاد العربية.
