يدور موضوع الكتاب حول فقه معاني الرسم القرآني، وبالتعريف "هو العلم الذي يكشف عن معاني وأسرار ولطائف الرسم القرآني"؛ وقد سمي خط المصحف بالرسم، لأن فيه صوراً لحروف زائدة لا تلفظ، وأخرى محذوفة ولها لفظ يقرأ، أو مبدلة بصورة حرف آخر بغير لفظه.
يعتبر مؤلف الكتاب أن مسائل البحث في الرسم القرآني قد تعلقت بأكثر من خمسة آلاف كلمة في عشرات الآلاف من المواضيع في القرآن الكريم، وجمعها في كتاب واحد أمراً صعباً لهذا دأب إلى الإقتصار في دراسته هذه على (المقطوع والموصول) وفيه ستة وثلاثون بحثاً يقول: "... فما قطع منها قارنته بمثيله مما وصل، وما وصل قارنته بمثيله مما قطع، ليستبين الفارق في المعنى وبيان سر القطع أو الوصل بالتقابل فيها للوصول إلى قاعدة تعم ما ليس له نظير، واتبعت المقطوع والموصول في معاني إستعمالات الحروف الهجائية.
وقد استند "العرابلي" في بحثه هذا إلى كتاب "جامع البيان في معرفة مرسوم القرآن" لـ"علي إسماعيل السيد هنداوي"، والبرهان في علوم القرآن للإمام "بدر الدين الزركشي" وصحيح البخاري وكتب أخرى أغنت الدراسة وأعطتها طابعاً علمياً وفقهياً في آنٍ.
