علقمة بن عبدة شاعر فحل، استطاع أن يطاول أمير شعراء عصره، وأن يتبوأ مكانة تليق به عند القدماء، عرفوها له، وعرفوه بها، لدرجة جعلته ذا ميسم خاص يميزه عن غيره من الشعراء. ومع كل ذلك لم يتجه الدارسون لدراسة شعره وتعرُّف السمات والخصائص التي جعلت منه شاعراً من شعراء الفصاحة والبيان؛ فهو لم يظفر بتعريف وافٍ أو دراسة تجلي للقارئ شخصيته وتوضح خصائصه الفنية. وتضع شعره في ميزان النقد، وهذا ما جعل الدكتور طه حسين يتجه للتشكيك في شعره فيقول "لا يكاد الرواة يذكرون عنه شيئاً إلا مفاخرته لامرئ القيس، ومدحه ملكاً من ملوك غسان؛ إلا أنه مات بعد ظهور الإسلام أي في عصر متأخر جداً بالقياس إلى امرئ القيس".
وإظهاراً لمكانة هذا الشاعر الفذّ عني "عبد الرزاق حسين" بتدوين رسالته هذه التي يتحدث فيها عن ذلك الشاعر الفذ إنصافاً له من ظلم تحيّفه، وغموض أحاط بأخباره وشعره. وللإحاطة بجميع جوانب الموضوع بدأ المؤلف بحثه بمقدمة بيّن فيها سر اهتمامه بهذا الشاعر، ثم عمد إلى تقسيم موضوعات رسالته على ستة فصول، وقف في الفصل الأول على بيئة الشاعر؛ وقبيلته؛ ومكانتها الشعرية، ولهجتها في شعر علقمة. أما الفصل الثاني فخصصه لتوضيح صورة هذا الشاعر الإنسان، ووقف في الفصل الثالث على توثيق شعره والتعريف بديوانه. وعنى في الفصل الرابع بأغراض علقمة الشعرية. أما الفصل الخامس فعقده لقراءة المناظرة الشهيرة التي دارت بين علقمة وامرئ القيس وحكم أم جُندب. وحاول في الفصل السادس والأخير استخلاص السمات والخصائص الفنية العامة في شعره، فعرض لمنهج القصيدة عنده، وذلك الأسلوب الذي جعل من شخصية علقمة الشعرية شخصية متميزة، ثم المعاني والأمثال في شعرهن وسلط الضوء على تلك العين السحرية المصورة وأردف ذلك بالحديث عن هناته القليلة، ثم تلك المكانة الشعرية التي تبوأها بقدرته وجدارته. وختم بحثه ببعض ما توصل إليه من نتائج.
