طرفة الشاعر الجاهلي المبدع عانى من ظلم الأقرباء وهو أشنع ضروب الاستبداد لأنه يأتي من الأيدي التي نحبها والتي نظن أننا نأمن شرّها. ولم تمهله المؤامرات التي حيكت ضده كثيراً فمات في ربيع عمره عن (26) عاماً، حيث قتل بوحشية لا لذنب اقترفه سوى إبداعه وإن كان بالهجاء.
سقط الشاعر ضحية لخلاف شخصي مع الملك. وإذا صحّت الرواية حول موته وأنه حمل الكتاب الذي يحوي أمراً بقتله، فإن هذا يدلّ على مدى عزة النفس والثقة التي كان طرفة يتمتع بها، وإن كانت في آخر الأمر، سبب مقتله.
بمقتل طرفة بن العبد في ربيع عمره وفي بداية عطائه حرم عشاق الأدب العربي والباحثين في علوم الصحراء والبداوة وتاريخ العرب من مصدر خصب كانت يمكن أن يزودهم بالمعلومات التي يحتاجونها، وحرموا من عطاء خيال مبدع.
وتبقى معلقة الشاعر شاهداً على مجد صاحبها وعلى الظلم والنهاية المؤلمة للشاعر.
وبين طيات هذا الكتاب سرد لقصة حياة طرفة بن العبد، وجمع لعدد من أهم قصائده وأشعاره.
