بعد المجلد الأول الذي تناول مسرح العصور القديمة (في اليونان وروما)، يعالج المجلد الثاني مسرح القرون الوسطى في القارة الآسيوية حيث بزغت حضارات جديدة تختلف عن الحضارة الغربية اختلافاً جذرياً. تبدة لنا الأشكال المسرحية الآسيوية مرتبطة بالدين والشعائر، ولدينا انطباع أن ما نشاهده هو متكلف إلى أقصى حد وخاضع لتقنين مبهم. غير أن هذه الأشكال متنوعة جداً، تتراوح بين الديني والدنيوي، وتتميز بتوليف الفنون الأدائية (شعراً ورقصاً وإيماء وغناء وعزفاً) وفق إيقاع دقيق ومرهف يوحد بين الجسد والروح. بلغ المسرح الآسيوي ذروة الكمال في "المسرح السنسكريتي" وفي "النو" الياباني، ولا يزال حياً في الوقت الحاضر من خلال ديمومة "الكابوكي" و"الكاتاكالي" و"الأوبرا الصينية".
قيل الكثير عن مسألة عدم وجود المسرح في الحضارة العربية. وكان علينا أن ننتظر مجهود المستشرقين للالتفات إلى الأشكال التراثية العربية بهدف تجديد حيويتها. لم يكن لهذه الأشكال القديمة أي اعتبار عند الأدباء، ولم يعط لها أي اهتمام في مرحلة النهضة العربية. وعندما استفاقت طليعة الفنانين، عثرت في هذا التراث على ملهمات مجددة في بحثهم عن صيغة متأصلة لإبداعهم. أما في الأيام الخالية، فلقد تذوق الجمهور العربي أشكالاً متنوعة، يدخل في تركيبها الأداء الشفهي والتعبير بالحركة، منها الحكواتي وخيال الظل ومجال التعزية، وبرزت فيما بينها ظواهر خارقة مثل "بابات" ابن دانيال والرواة العرب وعروض "عاشوراء".
