الكتاب هو الرابع في سلسلة "سيرة المسرح؛ إعلام وأعمال" والذي يمثل تأريخاً لمسرح "الباروك" وقد سبقه في هذه السلسلة سيرة المسرح في العصور القديمة بما يتضمن أعلام وأعمال المسرح في تلك الفترة وهو الكتاب الأول في هذه السلسلة، ثم تبعه الكتاب الثاني الذي أرّخ لأعلام وأعمال مسرح القرون الوسطى، ثم التأريخ لأعلام وأعمال المسرح في عصر النهضة في الكتاب الثالث من هذه السلسلة.
وها هو ذا الكتاب الرابع الذي يؤرخ ويتحدث عن سيرة مسرح الباروك من خلال إستعراض أهم أعلام وأعمال هذا المسرح، استعرض جوزف حرب في هذا الكتاب، وبعد إستهلاله بحديث عام عن مسرح "الباروك"، زمن المسرح الإليزابيتي بما تضمن الحديث عن أهم أعلام وأعمال، الكتِّاب المسرحين في هذه الفترة، وأهمهم شكسبير الذي تضمنت مسرحياته الدراما التاريخية (المسرح التاريخي) (ثلاثية هنري السادس، ريتشارد الثالث، حياة وموت الملك جون...) بالإضافة إلى ما قدمه من الكوميديات (المسرح الكوميدي) (ترويض الشرسة، تاجر البندقية زوجات وندسور المرحات...) إلى جانب ما قدمه من تراجيديات أو ما يمكن تسميته المسرح التراجيدي (روميو وجولييت، عطيل، الملك لير...) ثم الرومانسيات أو المسرح الرومانسي (بريكليس /سملبين، حكاية الشتاء، العاصفة).
وليتابع المؤلف من ثم إستعراض أهم الكتاب المسرحيين في تلك الفترة وأهم أعمالهم وهؤلاء هم بن جونسون، ثم اينبغوجونس، توماس ديكر، فرنسيس بومنت وجون فلتش، جون ويبستر، جون ويبستر، توماس ميدلتون، فيليب ماسينجر، جون فورد، لينتقل من ثم إلى الحديث عن عصر مسرحي آخر في مسيرة مسرح الباروك وهي فترة العصر الذهبي الأسباني، مستهلاً حديثه عن الأشكال والأنواع المسرحية التي سادت في تلك الفترة مع جدول تأريخي لها، وأهم الأعلام والأعمال: لوبه دي فيفا، غيلين دي كاسترد، رويزدي ألاركون تيرسودي مولينا، كوينونس دي بينافنته، كالدرون دي لاباركا، روخاس زوريلا، مويتراي كابانا.
