المؤتلف والمختلف لغة:" اسم فاعل من الائتلاف بمعنى الاجتماع والتلاقي، وهو ضد النفرة. والمختلف: اسم فاعل من الاختلاف ضد الاتفاق واصطلاحا: هو ما يتفق في الخط دون اللفظ. وللمؤتلف والمختلف صور متعددة منها: 1-المؤتلف في صورة حروفه والمختلف في شكله مثل:" سلام" و" سلاّم" الأول: بفتح المهملة وتخفيف اللام، والثاني: بفتح المهملة وتشديد اللام. 2-المؤتلف في صورة حروفه والمختلف في أعجامها مثل:" سِراج" و" سَرَاح"، الأول بكسر السين المهملة وبالجيم، والثاني بسين مهملة وحاء مهملة. 3-المؤتلف في صورة الخط، والمختلف في بعض الحروف، مثل:" زُنير" و" زُنين" الأول: بضم الزاي وفتح النون التي تليها، وسكون الياء المثناة تحت وآخره راء، والثاني: مثله سواء سوى أن آخره تنوين. وقد ألف المتقدمين من الأئمة في مشكلات الأسماء والأنساب المختلف منها والمؤتلف. وكان النوع الذي رسموه على قسمين أهدهما: في الأسماء وهو ما اتفق في الصورة واختلف في المعنى. والثاني: في الأنساب وهو نظيره أيضاً ومعناه. وبقي من أنواع المختلف والمؤتلف ما لم يصنف فيه وهو ما اتفق في الخط وتماثل في النقط والضبط مثل بلدتين أو قبيلتين أو صناعة ونسب، أو بلدة ولقب. لذا عمل ابن القيسراني على تأليف هذا الكتاب في المعروف بالأنساب المتفقة في الخط والمتماثلة في النقط والضبط. وقد حيله مرتباً على الحروف ليكون سهل التناول.
