يعمل الكتاب على عرض وتحليل المتغيرات والمستجدات التي عرفها الصراع العربي - الإسرائيلي على مدى ستة عقود (1949- 2009)، في محاولة للإجابة عن سؤال: هل سار الزمن خلال تلك الحقبة لمصلحة الكيان الصهيوني ورعاته أم لمصلحة قوى الممانعة العربية؟...
فقد هيمنت على طرفي الصراع العربي - الصهيوني على مدى خمسة عقود، منذ تأسيس دولة "إسرائيل" حتى نهاية القرن العشرين، مقولة طالما شعر الطرف العربي معها بالضعف والعجز مقابل شعور الطرف الآخر، الصهيوني، بالقوة والجبروت، غير أن هذه المشهدية النمطية - أي مقولة الجيش الإسرائيلي الذي لا يُقهر، المبنيّة أساساً على سلسلة هزائم مُنبت بها الجيوش العربية على مدى تلك العقود - أخذت تتغير مع بدايات القرن الجديد، حين اضطر هذا الجيش إلى التقهقر لأول مرة من أرض عربية كان يحتلها.
ومع تصاعد دور المقاومة في لبنان وفلسطين منذ مطلع القرن الجديد وفرضها معادلات جديدة في الصراع العربي - الصهيوني، وبخاصة في حرب لبنان 2006، ثم في حرب غزة 2009، أخذت هذه المشهدية النمطية تتحطم، وبدا الزمن مفتوحاً على إحتمالات لم يكن طرفا الصراع يأخذانها في الحسبان في ما مضى.
يتضمن الكتاب ثمانية فصول إلى جانب الخلاصة التنفيذية والمقدمة والخاتمة.
الفصل الأول بعنوان: "التداعيات العربية للنكبة"، والفصل الثاني: "الإنجازات الصهيونية عقب حرب 1948- 1949"، والفصل الثالث: "من ثورة 23 يوليو إلى حرب الإستنزاف ورحيل عبد الناصر 1952- 1970"، والفصل الرابع: "من إرهاصات الثورة الفلسطينية إلى خروج فصائل المقاومة من الأردن 1959- 1971"، والفصل الخامس: "سنوات السادات وتداعيات إفتقاد مصر ودورها القومي 1970- 1981"، والفصل السادس: "إنتقال فصائل المقاومة إلى لبنان وصيرورته ميداناً رئيسياً للمقاومة 1971- 1981"، والفصل السابع: "من غزو لبنان إلى إتفاق أوسلو 1982- 1993"، والفصل الثامن: "من إقامة السلطة الفلسطينية إلى فشل العدوان على غزة 1994- 2009".
