يمثل الوطن العربي الذي نعيش على أرضه في الوقت الحاضر حصيلة تاريخ طويل من التفاعل بين الإنسان العربي وبيئته الجغرافية التي عاش في كنفها منذ أزمان مختلفة بحسب القرب أو البعد عن الوطن الأول الذي ظهر فيه العرب منذ آلاف السنين، وكان هذا الوطن حسب ما يترجح في الأبحاث العلمية هو شبه جزيرة العرب.
هذا الكتاب يحتوي على وقائع الندوة التي أقامتها دائرة التراث العربي الإسلامي في المجمع العلمي العراقي تحت عنوان: "الوطن العربي: النواة والامتدادات عبر التاريخ". وقد شارك في هذه الندوة مجموعة من الباحثين المختصين. والكتاب موزع على ثلاثة عشر فصلاً تركزت حول مختلف الموضوعات التي تعالج أصول وفروع القبائل والأقوام التي عاشت في هذه المنطقة وتنقلت فيها. ولذلك فإن الأبحاث تناولت مجموعة من العناوين منها: "الأقوام الجزرية العربية في بلاد الرافدين" و"الكنعانيون من الأقوام العربية القديمة"، و"انتشار العرب في مصر وشرق أفريقيا قبل الإسلام"، و"انتشار قبيلة عبد القيس قبل الإسلام إلى نهاية القرن الأول الهجري"، إضافة إلى "الهلاليون في المغرب.." و"قبائل هلال وجشم والمعقل في المغربين الأوسط والأقصى.." و"بيوت العرب في الأندلس ودورها في التعريب"...
