لقد اصطلح العرب القدامى على تسمية اللهجات المختلفة بينهم بلغات منسوبة وغير منسوبة. أما المنسوبة فإلى قبائلهم ومدارسهم اللغوية. وغير المنسوبة وهي التي فقدت مرجعها وأصولها أو لأنها وردت على لسان أناس مجهولي النسب ومكان الإقامة.
وقد مرت اللغة بتطورات من الجاهلية المبكرة حتى العصور العباسية المتأخرة عبر مراحل أربعة: 1-اللغات الجنوبية الحميرية المنقرضة، 2-اللغات الشمالية، 3-لغة القرآن، 4-لغة البصرة والكوفة. وقد وافق اللغة في تطورها لهجات تولدت واختلفت عن بعضها البعض باختلاف القبائل والمناطق الجغرافية. ويمكن تقسيم هذه اللغات إلى لغات نحوية ولغات لغوية.
يتناول أمين ألبرت الريحاني على صفحات هذا الكتاب دراسة اللغات في هذا الإطار أي اللغات النحوية واللغوية، حيث يتتبع المنحى اللغوي في تطور اللغات أو اللهجات العربية، ومن ثم يعود إلى معالجة المنحى اللغوي فيها، مستشهداً بما أتى به من معلومات حول الموضوع لينهي دراسته بخاتمة يقف من خلالها على بعض الملاحظات التي أمكن استخراجها من الصورة العامة لتطور اللغات العربية القديمة.
