لو شكلت الهجرة ظاهرة بارزة في شخصية لبنان الجغرافية وارتبطت بشكل أساسي بحركة تجارته الخارجية، وبنية اقتصاده، وسوق العمل فيه. فكانت في إيجابياتها صمام أمان لنظامه الاقتصادي والاجتماعي في مواجهة حالات الجمود والتقهقر الاقتصادي الذي نتجت عنه الأزمات المعيشية وغيرها، إذ امتصت نسبا مختلفة من البطالة فيه، وأمنت له عائدات مالية ساهمت إلى التخفيف من تردي أوضاعه الاقتصادية والاجتماعية. وفي المقابل طغت سلبيات الهجرة في لبنان على إيجابياتها، من خلال النزف الخطير في نوعية المهاجرين، الذين كانوا في معظمهم من أصحاب الكفاءات، والقوى العاملة الشابة المؤهلة والمدربة والضرورية لسوق العمل الداخلي، خصوصا في مرحلة إعادة البناء والأعمار، والتنمية الشاملة. مما أدى إلى إفراغ سوق العمل الداخلية من اليد العاملة الوطنية، لتل مكانها اليد العاملة الأجنبية، مع ما ترتب على ذلك من تدني الناتج المحلي ونقل العملات الصعبة إلى خارج البلاد، بطريقة منتظمة ومتصاعدة، شكلت خطراً حقيقياً على العملة الوطنية، والدورة الاقتصادية، والحياة الاجتماعية.
هذا وقد استقطبت ظاهرة الهجرة في لبنان مجموعة كبيرة من المؤرخين والباحثين والدارسين والنقاد، الذين عالجوا هذا الموضوع من خلال منهجية زمنية تسلسلية راعت المراحل التاريخية التي مرت بها الهجرة. والدكتور جهاد نصري العقل واحد من هؤلاء الذين استرعت اهتماماتهم هذه الهجرة، حيث عالج هذا الموضوع بنفس منهجية هؤلاء، إلا أنه وإضافة إلى ذلك، عالج تعاطي أبرز المؤسسات الرسمية والأهلية مع هذه الظاهرة الفريدة التي شهدها تاريخ لبنان الحديث والمعاصر. معتمداً في ذلك على مجموعة من المراجع المتخصصة في هذا الموضوع، إلى جانب بعض وثائق ومحفوظات ومنشورات وزارات المغتربين والخارجية والداخلية وغيرها، والجامعة اللبنانية الثقافية في العالم، ومجموعة من الصحف والمجلات اللبنانية، إلى جانب بعض المقابلات الخاصة.
