يشكل هذا الكتاب مقاربة نقدية للمسألة الطائفية في لبنان، ودراستها كظاهرة سوسيولوجية في علاقتها باللغة، والثقافة، والسياسة. وفي هذا السياق يتساءل "جميل قاسم": " هل التنوع الديني في لبنان نعمة أم نقمة؟ وما الفرق، والحال هذه، ما بين الطوائفية - الإجتماعية كظاهرة سوسيولوجية طبيعية، والطائفية السياسية، كمنظومة إيديولوجية مخالفة لطبائع الإجتماع الحديث؟". وللإجابة على هذه التساؤلات وزع المؤلف كتابه إلى أربعة محاور.
في المحور الأول لم ينظر المؤلف إلى الإنسان، إنطلاقاً من ماهيته الفردية - الإنسانية، القائمة على فكرة المواطنية وإنما أراد تعينه إنطلاقاً من انخراطه في المجتمع الإنساني - المفتوح والحر. فاللبناني "هو لبناني، عربي، وإنسان، فلماذا نعينه بمحددات سابقة على انتمائه الوطني الذي تقوم عليه فكرة المواطنية؟
وفي المحور الثاني تقض المؤلف جذور الطائفية، التاريخية في "نظام القائمقاميتين"، ونظام المتصرفية" ليبرهن على أن الطائفية ليست "متجذرة" في تكوين هذا البلد التاريخي، على عكس النظرة الطائفية السائدة، حتى نشوء "دولة لبنان الكبير" في ظل الإنتداب الفرنسي، الذي كرس الطائفية - السياسية كشرعة حقوقية للدولة اللبنانية.
أما المحور الثالث فكان نقد للنظرة الجماعوية للطائفية، التي تقوم على تداول الطائفية، بمسميات مختلفة كالمارونية السياسية، والشيعية السياسية، والسنية السياسية ... مع تبادل الأدوار والأزمات.
وقدم المؤلف في المحور الرابع طرحاً بديلاً للطائفية السياسية يقوم على العلمنة والعلمانية، كصيغة بديلة للطائفية وهي الصيغة الملائمة لضمان كرامة الإنسان وحريته واختياره ...
