لقد جلب الثامن والعشرون من شباط / فبراير سنة 1955 أنباء بأن ثمانية من ملاحي المدمرة كالداس التابعة للبحرية الكولومبية قد سقطوا من على متن السفينة واختفوا في ظل عاصفة في البحر الكاريبي.
كانت السفينة مسافرة من موبيل في ولاية ألاباما في الولايات المتحدة حيث رَسَتْ هناك لفترة وجيزة لإجراء بعض التصليحات إستعداداً للسفر بإتجاه مرفأ كارتاغينا الكولومبي، حيث وصلت إلى هناك بعد ساعتين من حدوث المأساة.
بعد ذلك بدأ البحث عن الملاحين فوراً بالتعاون مع السلطات الأميركية في قناة بناما التي تتولى القيام بعمليات ومهام مثل المراقبة العسكرية وغيرها من الأعمال الإنسانية في جنوبي البحر الكاريبي.
بعد أربعة أيام توقفت عمليات البحث وأعلن رسمياً عن وفاة البحارة المفقودين، بعد أسبوع من ذلك التاريخ ظهر أحدهم نصف ميت على شاطئ مهجور في كولومبيا الشمالية بعد أن عاش لمدة عشرة أيام بدون طعام ولا ماء على متن طوف خشبي وكان اسمه لويس أليجاندرو فيلاسكو.
هذا الكتاب هو رواية صحافية عما أخبرني إياه ذلك الملاح.
