هذه الرواية هي أحدث روايات الكاتب العالمي جابرييل جارسيا ماركيز الذي حصل على جائزة نوبل للآداب سنة 1982، والذي قرأ له الكثيرون من قراء العربية: مائة عام من الغزلة، وخريف البطريرك، وأرنديرا البريئة وقصص أخرى والتي نشرت تحت عنوان أجمل رجل غريق في العالم. على أن الرواية التي تحتويها دفتا هذا الكتاب هي آخر رواياته، أعني أحداثها، فقد نشرت بالإسبانية وترجمت إلى ألإنجليزية في أواخر عام 1982. وبالرغم من أن هذه الرواية ستحظى بشهرة كبيرة لأن مؤلفها هو ماركيز إلا أن الكثيرين قد يعتبرونها أقل مستوى من مائة عام من العزلة، أشهر رواياته.
هذا وإذا قرأنا تقرير لجنة جائزة نوبل للآداب عندما قررت منحه جائزتها سنة 1982 نقرأ الآتي: "...رواياته التي يمتزج فيها الخيال بالواقع في ظل تركيبة ثرية لعالم شعري" وإذا كان هذا الكلام ينطبق تماماً على مائة عام من العزلة، إلا أنه لا ينطبق تماماً على هذه الرواية التي نقدمها، فليس هنا مثلاً مزاج للخيال بالواقع، فنحن أمام واقع مطلق أساسه جريمة قتل قام بها التوأمان فيكاريو دفاعاً عن شرف أختهما ضد سانتياجو نصار، ومع هذا فلم يتحرك أحد لمنع الجريمة... مع أن الأدلة لم تكن ثابتة على الضحية، هل معنى ذلك أن هذه المدينة بأجمعها، نقصد برجالها ونسائها وسلطات الدولة فيها، بل وأكثر من ذلك أصدقاؤه أيضاً، كانوا يريدون الخلاص من سانتياجو نصار؟..
