يسرد المؤلف في هذا الكتاب "رحلة في الشرق" تاريخ حياته ومراحل تطوره الدراسي حتى بعد عودته إلى بلده وخدمة مجتمعه. وهناك كتب (سياحة في الغرب) بالأسلوب نفسه، وبصيغة المتكلم ومعه شخصيتان رئيستان، يسمى الأولى منهما (الهادي) وهي تمثل الفضيلة والأخلاق الحميدة وطهارة الروح وحب أهل البيت، ويمنحه من القوة ما يتناسب وأعماله الصالحات في دار الدنيا. والشخصية الثانية يسميها (الأسود) وهي تمثل الذنوب والظلم وسوء الخلق والشهوات مما وقع تحت سيطرتها في دار الدنيا. فالهادي يهديه في رحلته الشاقة هذه ويسهل عليه تحملها، والأسود يسعى في إيراده موارد الهلكة. والسير به على الطرق المحفوفة بالمخاطر والأهوال والعذاب، وبقدر انصياعه لأضاليل هذا الأسود في دار الدنيا يكون وقوعه في ا لعذاب والشقاء في البرزخ.
