كثيرة هي الكتب التي تخصصت في تراجم علماء الشريعة. إلاّ أنها كانت تقتصر على ذكر إسم مترجم وأساتذته وتلاميذه ومؤلفاته. ويبقى القارئفي حيرة إذا أراد معرفة نمط حياة أولئك أثناء الدراسة، فيتساءل كيف يدبرون معائشهم وما الذي يختلج في صدورهم؟ وكيف كانوا يواجهون المشكلات العلمية التي تطرأ أثناء البحث والنقاش؟
وهذا الكتاب الذي ألّفه واحد من المجتهدين الذين تابعوا مراحل الدراسة بكافة أطوارها حتى بلوغه الاجتهاد، يجيب على كل تلك الأسئلة ويتوسع فيها. ولا نبالغ إذ قلنا إنه الكتاب الأول في العربية الذي شرح حياة الطالب للعلوم الدينية من ألفها حتى يائها. والكتاب موزع على ثلاث مراحل:
1- الطفولة: حيث الدرس في الكتّاب ومساعدته لأبيه في الأعمال الزراعية.
2- المراهقة والشباب: دراسته للعلوم الدينية في كلّ من: قوجان وأصفهان ومشهد.
3- سن النضج ورحلته إلى النجف الأشرف التي قضى فيها عشرين عاماً، درس فيها على أيدي كبار العلماء الذين كان في مقدمتهم الملّا كاظم الخراساني صاحب الشهرة العريضة في علم الأصول والمرجع الذي لمع إسمه أثناء الحركة الدستورية في إيران عام 1908.
